Illumafication as we like to call it, is the process of digitally redrawing, manipulating and montaging photography and digital illustration.
It begins with the photography and image selection and the conceptualisation of the final image. A subject and style is chosen which may carry a particular value in it's meaning or visual quality. Then that image is scanned into a high resolution digital format if it's not already, and some baasic preparation is undertaken. Cleaning, resizing, retouching, colour alteration, the creation of working layers etc.
If there is any compositing or rearranging this is also done before the redrawing commences. Sometimes several photographs are combined to create a montage or compiled to become one entirely new image. It's all about ambiguity!

The aim is to enhance or alter an image's visual impact by creating a vibrant and ambiguos puzzle for the eye and a human verses nature debate for the mind
The redrawing involves zooming right in and picking out different shades and tones and painting over them with block colours instead of gradations and texture. Generally the human detail is redrawn people and their creations, while the natural textures of the photograph remain.
When the image is complete, it is sent off to Southern Cross Digital to print. Then Agent Mike fits and staples the canvas over their stretcher bars, and adds the hanging wires and builds the frame if one is required.
For Custom Illumagrafs, an initial idea for treatment must be approved by the customer and a deposit paid before work can commence. Upon completion, customers are entitled to make a request for any minor alterations without any extra charge.
