the story of the cowboy

The Cowboy is a unique creature with a tragic but uplifting story. He met Agent Mike many years ago out in the wilds when Mike was out walking one time, and to this day he is the only person who has heard the tale.

It began when a pair of misguided and selfish humans brought a young boy into the world who struck a different pose to the other babies. With a lumpy mishapen head and cloven hands and feet, he made one very ugly baby, but one hell of a beautiful cow.

Deciding that they would be unable to endure the humiliation of nurturing and guiding this deformed little fellow, they abandoned him one night to the dingoes. Figuring their money would be better spent on brand name goods and a trip to Bali, they never once looked back. What they didn't expect, is that he might survive.

His cries were heard by some particularly curious cows, who seemed to indentify with the boy. In their rough and simple kind of way, they took him in and raised him as their own, away from the prying eyes of the farmer.

Years passed as he grew strong and he became close to all the animals around the farm. He loved to go swimming in the dam with the ducks, played pick-up-sticks with the chickens, chased stuff with the dog and played British bulldog with the soft and bouncey sheep. Sometimes however, he would just wander off on his own for days, appreciating the solitude and beauty of the Australian countryside.

It was on one of these little treks that he came across a little grey box discarded like himself by the side of the road. Having been taught to read by the owl, he could making out the marking "Macintosh SE" on one side of the box, and a whole mixture of letters on a board attached to it. He also recognised a power cable having seen them attached to various tools around the farm.

His curiosity demanded that he take that box into his arms and raise it too, like his own child.

The farmyard became a buzz of excitement when the animals saw the Cowboy fire this baby up. It had a little panel which lit up and when you pushed some of the letters on the board, the pattern on the panel would change. Hours of fun.

Gradually the Cowboy's click click click became a rattling stream as he grasped the workings of the box. He transformed blocks into pictures, created sounds and music and began typing up a torrent of thoughts and feelings.

His imagination was fuelled and he became curious about
the world of humans but didn't really want to contact them. This led to the fateful day out bush when the Cowboy felt strangely compelled to make contact with a human who was wandering aimlessly through the trees, enjoying nature and its peace. As you can imagine, Agent Mike was quite surprised by the meeting, but was quickly charmed by the Cowboy's endearing character. They walked together and spoke at length, discovering each other's history and sharing tales of two very different lives.

When Mike heard of his computing experience, he introduced the Cowboy to the internet. This was perfect. He could spend hours and hours communicating with the world, contributing and absorbing all he could, existing in a society he never had to be seen in.

This is how we have arrived at Art by Cowboy. A chance for him to share his artwork with the world, and a chance for Agent Mike to combine his own creative interests with a business idea that he can control and develop. Hopefully also, a chance for you to obtain imagery that may enrich your life or the life of somebody close to you whilst giving something back to the environment which produced it
